Chess in Madrid: clubs, tournaments and places to play

Madrid's chess lives mostly in its federated clubs: neighbourhood rooms in Chamberí, Hortaleza, Moratalaz, Vallecas or Carabanchel, and a club in nearly every large town of the region, from Alcalá de Henares and Alcorcón to Collado Villalba in the sierra. Around them runs a steady stream of rapid and blitz tournaments, and away from the clubs there are chess bars in Malasaña and La Latina, a Friday meetup in Chamberí and monitor-led sessions in two Chamartín parks.

Chess960 over the board in Madrid

In Chess960, or Fischer Random, the pieces on the back rank start from a shuffled set-up drawn before the game, which takes memorised opening theory off the table. The rules, and boards to play it online, are at ch960.com.

Around Madrid it surfaces inside ordinary club life instead of having a circuit of its own: a club in Hortaleza counts it among the formats of its Friday evenings, and a club in the Delicias neighbourhood has held tournaments in the format. The regional tournament calendar read for this edition shows no Chess960 date after those.

What the sources show for Madrid:

How this guide is put together

Every entry in the guide has a name and at least one public page behind it: a club site, the Madrid federation's venue list, a district council notice, a tournament record, a press piece. Club and tournament names stay in Spanish, exactly as their organisers print them.

Beside each fact you will find the page it was taken from, the date that page was read and a flag saying whether the source is official, secondary or unverified. When no page states a detail, the card says so and leaves the gap open. The rules are set out on the about page; to add a place or fix a line, use the form.

Is your club or chess night missing?

Tell us about it, or about a line that is wrong, and add a link to a page where the fact can be checked. You hear back only if you ask for a reply.
